Betting sites, E-citizen among popular Google Searches in March

Google Search Trends indicate that betting sites continue to attract the highest amount traffic on Google in Kenya. Three years ago, the top search was always football; however that has now been overtaken by betting sites.

Betting sites featuring in Google Search Trends for March are Sportpesa, Betin, Betika, Elitebet, Betpawa, Zulubet, Forebet, Betway, Betensured, Betyetu, Mcheza, Adibet. The new trend has seen the Government recently raise taxes for betting, lottery, gaming and competition from the current rates of 7.5%, 5%, 12%, and 15% respectively to a uniform tax rate of 50% for all categories.

The second top searched item was ecitizen, an official government digital payments platform that enables Kenyan citizens, residents and visitors access and pay for government services online.. Launched in 2014 by the ICT authority of Kenya, ecitizen gives Kenyans access to essential services such as business name search and registration, driving licences application and renewal, passport and VISA application without having to visit a government office.

With the current unpredictable weather patterns, Kenyans went online to search for weather, the third top searched query. Online sites such as OLX Kenya, Jumia Kenya, Kilimall, which made it to the third top searches in March demonstrating the e-commerce is on the rise in the country.

The fourth top search was Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), the body charged with admitting students to public and private universities following the its invitation for the KCSE class of 2016 students for a second revision of their degree courses. Kenyans also went online to search more about Government Human Resource Information System (GHRIS), a portal by the government of Kenya where people look for jobs offered by government and its agencies.

Dropping to the fourth position, English Premier League, which once enjoyed the prominence of being a ‘most searched’ item has since been overtaken by betting. Some of the EPL teams that were searched this month are: Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Other top searches were Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and iTax, KRA’s taxpayers portal; The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) following  its release of new draft rules seeking to carry out inspection on all private vehicles every two years and every year for commercial vehicles. Kenyans also googled Gospel artist Willy Paul after he released a song featuring Jamaican songstress Alaine. The song, ‘I  Do’- complete with a music video has so far garnered over 1.5 million views on YouTube. He also led the list of top searched people.

Daniel Ndambuki aka Churchill was the second top searched person after rumors about his death went viral while Tanzanian singer Diamond Platnumz who recently collaborated with renowned American singer and song writer Ne-yo and released a song- ‘Marry You’ was number 3 on the list.

American female rapper Nicki Minaj, who has been involved in a much publicized tussle with fellow rapper Remy- Ma; Chris Brown, American singer and songwriter, after he appeared as a guest star on popular TV series ‘Blackish’ raising both negative and positive reactions online; Rihanna, American- based Barbadian songstress after she had a music tour, Lionel Messi, The Argentine football player who has been suspended for four Argentina games for insulting a referee during the Chile vs Argentina match; Alaine after the American actress released a song alongside Willy Paul; DJ Afro; and Beyonce, an American singer Beyonce Knowles who’s pregnant with twins and in March, she released a new song- Sand castles, were also among the top searches.


On top ‘How to’ searches, How to write a CV came in first followed by How to make pancakes and How to play lotto. Kenyans also googled, How to kiss, How to make money online, How to join illuminati, How to tie a tie and How to write an application letter.  How to gain weight and   How to style braids were  also top on the list.
